SABOŪN was born from a personal connection to Mediterranean tradition and a deep belief that modern living doesn't have to mean sacrificing the wisdom of the past.
Our founders grew up watching grandmothers and great-aunts use simple bars of olive oil soap for everything — dishes, laundry, floors, even bathing. That soap was pure, effective, and completely biodegradable. But as life got busier and homes modernized, that tradition started to fade, replaced by chemical-laden products that promised convenience but delivered harm.
We asked ourselves: What if we could honor that Mediterranean heritage while making it work for modern life? What if we could create products that perform beautifully without harsh chemicals, unnecessary additives, or greenwashing?
SABOŪN is our answer. We're a small team with Mediterranean and Middle Eastern roots, partnering with third-generation soap makers across the Med to preserve authentic Castile soap traditions while adapting them for today's households.
Rooted in 2000 years of Mediterranean tradition
The name originates from the Castile region of Spain, where olive oil-based soap has been produced since at least the 11th century. Its historical reputation for quality was so renowned that the English word "castile" became synonymous with fine, hard, white soap.
SABOŪN, meaning "soap" in Arabic, honors this Mediterranean tradition. Arab soapmakers pioneered olive oil soap in Aleppo centuries before Castile—the Moors later brought these techniques to Spain, where they evolved into what we now know as Castile soap.
